This past weekend, our students had an exciting journey back in time to explore the fascinating world of the Ancient Aztecs! 🚀
We began by mapping out the Aztec Empire, locating modern-day Mexico City, Lake Texcoco, and the surrounding mountain ranges: Sierra Madre Occidental, Sierra Madre Oriental, and Sierra Madre del Sur. The students also learned about the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean—key geographical features that shaped the Aztec world.
We discussed the story of Hernán Cortés and the Spanish conquest. Students traced the route Cortés might have taken, imagining the vast ocean crossing that brought him to the Aztec lands. They were fascinated by how geography played a role in both the rise and fall of this incredible empire.
We also explored the rich culture and traditions of the Aztecs:
✨ The kids were captivated by the legend of Huitzilopochtli and how the Aztecs came to settle at Lake Texcoco after following the vision of an eagle on a cactus with a snake in its mouth. The Lumineers were surprised to learn that this is the image you can see in the flag of Mexico today! 🇲🇽
✨ We explored the pyramids and temples, discussing their ceremonial purposes and the Flower Wars, battles fought to capture prisoners for human sacrifices. 😵
✨ Students also learned about Chinampas, the “floating gardens” that showcased the Aztecs’ ingenious agricultural techniques. 🌱
One of the highlights was starting a collaborative Aztec mosaic art piece. Each student contributed to a section of the mosaic, showcasing traditional Aztec patterns and symbols. We’re excited to continue working on this project and complete it together this coming weekend! 🎨
